Thermal/Flow, Electronic Systems Cooling, and Space Systems Thermal > Solving the model
Solution Monitor
The Solution Monitor provides you with information from the solver during the analysis in the following solver environments:
Simcenter Nastran
Simcenter Samcef
Simcenter 3D Multiphysics
Simcenter 3D Thermal/Flow
Simcenter 3D Space Systems Thermal
Simcenter 3D Electronic Systems Cooling
Simcenter 3D Acoustics BEM
During the solve, you can also search the information that is displayed in the Solution Monitor.
Multiphysics solver environment
When you run one of the following coupled Multiphysics analyses, the Solution Monitor displays text output from each solver on a separate tab:
Coupled Thermal-Structural
Coupled Flow-Structural
Coupled Thermal-Flow-Structural
| Tab | Solver |
|---|---|
| Simcenter 3D Multiphysics | Coupled solver |
| Simcenter 3D Thermal/Flow | Thermal solverFlow solver |
| Simcenter Nastran | Structural solver |
Displayed information
Depending on the solution type, the following information is displayed:
Solver version, running time, and run directory folder name.
Model summary. For example, for thermal and flow solutions, this summary includes the number of entities, ambient conditions, internal mesh check, and boundary conditions.
Status of the solution and current module being executed by the thermal solver.
Convergence residuals at each iteration during the analysis.
Contact and material status of the number of nodes in contact.
Material status of the number of plastic, creep, or damaged elements.
Energy evolution.
Evolution of displacement as a function of time for selected nodes and components.
Warnings and errors.
Depending on your solver environment, you can request several other types of graphs to display in the Solution Monitor. For more information, see Displaying graphs in the Solution Monitor using the Report simulation object.
Terminating or stopping the analysis
The Abort command terminates the analysis. The software removes all temporary files and does not post process the results. You cannot restart or continue aborted solutions.
Note:
Not available for Simcenter Nastran solutions.
The Stop command stops the analysis before the end. The software keeps temporary files, performs results post-processing, and creates results output files. You can restart a stopped solution.
Note:
Available for flow or thermal-flow solutions, or for Simcenter Nastran SOL 402. You cannot terminate or stop other analyses in the Simcenter Nastran solver environment.
To restart SOL 402, use a restart solution as explained in External restarts.
Generating an intermediate results file
The Get Results command generates an intermediate results file that contains the requested output results computed so far during the solve. When you choose this command:
The solver proceeds until the next converged iteration, time step, or the end of the current subcase.
The computation pauses while the software generates the file with the requested output results.
The solver resumes until you request intermediate results again or it reaches the end.
During steps 1 and 2, the Get Results command is unavailable. A new intermediate results file is generated each time you click the Get Results command.
The intermediate results file is generated with the following file name and displayed on the appropriate tab:
For thermal flow steady-state solutions,
- iteration .bun For thermal flow transient solutions,
- increment .bun For SOL 402,
- step .op2
To view the intermediate results in post-processing, in the Post Processing Navigator, right-click Imported Results node and choose Import Results.
Note:
Available for flow or thermal-flow solutions, or for Simcenter Nastran SOL 402. You cannot terminate or stop other analyses in the Simcenter Nastran solver environment.
For a flow or coupled thermal-flow solutions, use the parallel flow solver.
For SOL 402, the Get Results command is available with a 64-bit OP2 file. If you request a 32-bit OP2 file to reduce the output file size, the command is not available. For information on setting the OP2 file format, see ILP-64 executable file formats.
To restart SOL 402, use a restart solution as explained in External restarts.
Monitoring real-time solution results during the solve
Use the SC Monitor command to display real-time instantaneous results in the Solution Control Monitor. You can evaluate the results on your model, while they are computed by the solver, in the Solution Control Monitor graphics window.
During the analysis, you can:
Examine results on clipped planes, or probe individual node results. For velocity results, you can use arrows or streamlines to track how the fluid is moving in the flow domain.
Modify thermal and flow convergence criteria that the solver uses at the next iteration of the solve.
For more information, see Solution Control Monitor.
Note:
Not available for Simcenter Nastran solutions.
Keeping the monitor open
The Solution Monitor closes after approximately 15 seconds if you do not click Yes when the solve finishes, regardless of whether the solve was successful. To keep the monitor open until you click No, set the following environment variable:
XMON_STAY_OPEN=1
The Solution Monitor is based in part on the work of the Qwt project (
