Post-processing > Post processing element and nodal results

Options for elemental results

If your solver calculates results at the centroid of elements, the post-processor includes the centroidal results in the Post Processing Navigator as elemental results.

Note:

If your solver does not calculate results at the centroid of elements, you can create an elemental display from element-nodal results. For information on how to do so, see Using element-nodal results to create elemental displays.

You can create a contour display of averaged or unaveraged elemental results.

  • For unaveraged elemental results, the post-processor displays the value of the elemental result across the entire element. Thus, the coloring of the contour display is always constant across individual elements and is typically discontinuous across element edges and faces.

  • For averaged elemental results, at each node, the post-processor displays the average of the values of the elemental result for each element that shares the node. Thus, the coloring of the contour display typically varies continuously across individual elements and across element edges and faces.

Calculating invariant results from averaged elemental results

When you turn on averaging, post-processing uses the averaged values of the elemental vector or tensor results to calculate:

  • The magnitude for vector results like heat flux.

  • The principal values, maximum shear, octahedral shear, and so on for tensor results.

Controlling averaging of elemental results

To average elemental results, in the Result tab of the Post View dialog box, select Nodes from the Combine At list and then select Average from the Nodal Combination list. By default, the averaging occurs across all elements that share a node. However, you can optionally subdivide the averaging based on any combination of the material and property IDs of the elements, element type, and feature angle.

For more information on these averaging options, see Averaging options for elemental and grid point results.
