Particulate reinforced ply strength predictions

The strength predictions for this category of ply is obtained by first assuming a uniform state of stress in the matrix and in the particle. In tension, we thus write:

where εm corresponds to the strain in the matrix, εf corresponds to the strain in the particle, and εpc is the strain in the particulate ply. In terms of stresses, this equation can be rewritten:

where σm, σf , and σpc correspond respectively to the stress in the matrix, in the particle, and in the reinforced ply. If we assume that failure occurs when the matrix breaks, one can write for the strength in tension:
