Initial stress/strain

You can use the Initial Stress/Strain command to define a stress or strain tensor field that represents the mechanical internal load effects that exist prior to the start of a solve. For example, you can import the strains computed from a previous solution as a field, and use that as the starting point for your new solution.

Balanced strain

You can include residual stress and initial inelastic strain that does not cause deformation by generating balanced strains. Balanced stresses and strains represent pre-existing stresses in the component as modeled.

To simulate the balanced strains, you create a separate solution of type SOL 401 Balanced Strain Generation (Simcenter Nastran) or Balanced Strain Generation (Multiphysics). In that solution, you define unbalanced stresses and strains on a model with no constraints and no other loads. From that solution, you create an offset strain field that you can apply to a balanced Initial Stress/Strain load in a SOL 401 Multi-Step Nonlinear (Simcenter Nastran) or Multi-Step Nonlinear (Multiphysics) solution.

Corresponding Nastran Syntax

The Initial Stress/Strain command corresponds to the Simcenter Nastran INITS bulk entry.
