Creating cross section regions (LS-DYNA)

In the LS-DYNA environment, you can create a Cross-Section Region type of Region to define the physical location of a planar cross section (cutting plane) on which to initialize the stress values that you specify the Initial Stress command. For example, you typically define a Cross-Section Region through the middle of the shank of a bolt modeled with solid elements.

The physical property tables that you specify in the Initial Stress dialog box together with the elements associated with the cross-section are the elements that are subject to the prescribed preload stress.

The Cross-Section Region type of Region corresponds to the LS-DYNA *DATABASE_CROSS_SECTION_PLANE keyword.

Specifying the planar cross section

In the Region dialog box, you use the Cutting Plane and Properties options to define the location and physical characteristics of the cross section. The cross section:

  • Can be rectangular or circular.

  • Should cut through deformable elements only and not through rigid bodies.

While you define the size, shape, and location of the cross section, the software determines the nodes and elements that are associated with the cross section. LS-DYNA lists the nodes and elements for each cross section under the Interface Definition heading in the D3HSP file.

  • LS-DYNA requires that a cross section consist of the nodes that define the cutting surface of the plane and the deformable elements to one side of that plane that also touch that cutting surface.

  • For best results, the cutting plane should cleanly pass through the middle of the elements, with an equal number of elements on either side of the plane. LS-DYNA removes elements that intersect the edges of the cutting plane from the cross-section region.
