Evaluate the durability damage of a stress history

This example shows how to evaluate the durability damage of a stress history function with two full cycles.

In the XY Function Navigator , load the AFU file that contains the stress history record.

(Optional) Plot the Stress_History function.

The variable amplitude stress history consists of two full cycles:

  • Cycle 1 has a stress amplitude of +/- 35 MPa and a stress range of 70 MPa.

  • Cycle 2 has a stress amplitude of +/- 70 MPa and a stress range of 140 MPa.

Both cycles have a zero mean stress.

Choose Durability tab→Durability group→Evaluate Damage .

Click Add Function .

  1. In the Record Name column, select Stress_History.To select more than one function at a time, hold Shift and select the functions you want.

  2. Click OK.

Note:

Because the damage is cumulated for all selected functions, the functions that you select must all be of the same type. Select either stress histories or strain histories.

In the Durability Damage Evaluation dialog box, the software populates the Maximum (1) box in the Nominal Range Bin Definition group and the Minimum (2) and Maximum (3) boxes in the Mean Bin Definition group.

The graph shows values for the entire stress history.

  • Maximum stress range

  • Minimum stress value

  • Maximum stress value

  1. Click the Fatigue Options tab.

  2. From the list, select a fatigue durability object. When you evaluate damage in a fatigue durability object, you select a fatigue life criterion and a cyclic stress strain model, and define the number of elements in the hysteresis loop. In this example, the Fatigue Life Criterion list is set to Stress Life.

  3. Click Choose Material .

Select a material for which the durability material properties are defined.

Click Export to Spreadsheet .

To export the damage evaluation results to an CSV file, click Export to CSV File .

The spreadsheet contains the following results:

  • The count range-mean matrix

  • The damage range-mean matrix

  • The percent total damage range-mean matrix

  • The total and out-of-range numbers of counted loading cycles

  • The total and out-of-range damage

  • The crack initiation estimate in number of events and in hours
