Defining PSHELL structural damping (Nastran)

If you are working with Simcenter Nastran, when you create a PSHELL type of physical property table in Pre/Post, you can use the structural damping coefficient (GE) on the associated materials to define damping for the elements associated with that table:

  • MID1 = membrane material

  • MID2 = bending material

  • MID3 = transverse shear

  • MID4 = membrane-bending coupling

In Simcenter Nastran, the SHLDAMP parameter controls whether the software uses the structural damping coefficient defined on just the MID1 material or on all of the materials you specified for the physical property table. In Pre/Post, the SHLDAMP list in the Solution Parameters dialog box (available from the Modeling Objects Manager dialog box) lets you set this parameter.

  • If you select SAME (PARAM, SHLDAMP=SAME), which is the default, the software uses the structural damping coefficient (GE) defined on the MID1 material for the PSHELL physical property table for the all MIDi materials that you specified for that table.

  • If you select DIFF (PARAM, SHLDAMP=DIFF), the software uses the structural damping coefficient (GE) defined on each MIDi for the PSHELL entry, provided that the GE field is defined for any of the MID2, MID3, and/or MID4 materials in at least one PSHELL physical property table in the input file. With this option, if any structural damping coefficient (GE) value is blank, Simcenter Nastran treats it as having a value of zero when you solve your model.
