Geometry optimization

Geometry optimization is a process that helps you find the best solution for a design objective. To set up the optimization, you specify:

  • The design objective as the overall goal of the optimization, such as reducing weight.

  • Design constraints, such as minimizing displacement or stress.

  • Design variables that the optimization can modify, such as feature dimensions in your CAD model or physical properties of your finite element model.

The optimization performs a series of iterations, adjusting the design variables within the design constraints, until it converges on a modified design that fulfills the design objective without violating the design constraints. It modifies your master model geometry, idealized part geometry, or finite element model by adjusting the specified design variables. The algorithm uses a simple gradient method.

After you solve the optimization solution, you can analyze the results in Post Processing.

Note:

Optimization is not supported for assembly FEM (.afm) files.
