Manually creating surface effect elements

You can manually create SURF152 and SURF154 surface effect elements.

  1. In the FEM file, create a structural or thermal mesh. For example, in a structural mesh, you can create a mesh of SHELL181 elements.

  2. Create the appropriate real constants and KEYOPTS modeling objects to specify additional options for the surface effect elements. For example, create a SURF154ET modeling object to specify options for the SURF154 elements, such as whether the elements have midside nodes.

  3. Use the Mesh Associated Data dialog box to specify the appropriate surface effect elements to associate with the mesh. For example, select SURF154 (Surface Effect) from the SHELL181 Keyopts list.

  4. Use the other options in the Mesh Associated Datato specify any other options, such as the Material Orientation, for the elements.Note: The Material Orientation coordinate system that you define in the Mesh Associated Data dialog box overrides the Direction coordinate system that you specify in the Pressure dialog box.

  5. In the Simulation file, define the boundary conditions to apply to the surface effect elements. For example, in a structural analysis, apply a component pressure to the elements. In the Pressure dialog box, select Components from the Type list.Ensure that the Automatic Creation of Surface Effect Elements check box is cleared.
