Create a design constraint for topology optimization
The following procedure creates a design constraint and adds it to an existing solution or subcase. To create a design constraint without adding it to a solution or subcase, use the Modeling Objects command.
In the Simulation Navigator, under an active topology optimization solution or subcase, right-click the Design Constraint node and choose New Design Constraint.
In the Name box, type a unique name for the design constraint or use the default name.
In the Label box, type a unique integer for the modeling object, or use the provided one.The dialog box automatically displays the next available modeling object number. However, you might want to change this if you use a particular series of numbers to identify certain types of modeling objects.
(Optional) In the Description box, type a description of the design constraint. You can also click Description to open the Description dialog box. This lets you see more of the text that you type, as well as cut, copy, or paste text.
If you are creating a solution-level design constraint, from the Definition Method list, select Standard or Advanced. If you select Standard, any weight response is assumed to be in the Z-direction, indicating that there is no directional mass. If you select Advanced, you can specify the direction of the mass.
In the Response Label box, type a unique design response identifier, or use the provided one. This label must begin with an alphabetic character and cannot exceed eight characters.Tip: To make it easier to identify this design constraint in the optimization spreadsheet, use a descriptive label.
From the Response Type list, select the response to constrain. The options that appear in this list vary, depending on whether you are creating the design constraint for a solution or a subcase, and the subcase type.Depending on the selected response, other options might appear on the dialog box. For example, if the design constraint is to limit displacement, you are prompted to specify the degrees of freedom and select the nodes. For more information on design constraint options, see the following topics:Design Constraint - Global dialog boxDesign Constraint - Statics dialog boxDesign Constraint - Normal Modes dialog boxDesign Constraint - Direct Frequency dialog boxDesign Constraint - Modal Frequency dialog boxDesign Constraint - Buckling dialog boxNote: If you select elements in the graphics window, be sure to select only elements of the appropriate type. For example, if Element Dimension is set to 1D and Element Type is set to CBEAM, you can select any 1D element, even if it is not a CBEAM element. If you select elements that are not the appropriate type, Simcenter Nastran might use unintended responses from other elements for which the response item code is still valid.
In the Lower and Upper boxes, type the appropriate values for the selected response. The unit of measure depends on the selected response. You do not have to include both a lower and upper limit. For example, you can set an upper limit without setting a lower one. If you do not want to specify a limit, leave the corresponding box blank. If you type 0, the solver interprets that as the constraint value.
If you are creating a design constraint for a direct or modal frequency subcase, and you set Frequency Math Function Type to anything other than Value, in the Low End of Frequency and High End of Frequency boxes, type the appropriate values.
