Structural stress methods

The structural stress concept was developed for the fatigue life assessment of off-shore applications, which consist of a lot of thick-walled tubular structures. The structural stress is in this case determined ahead of the weld and can be calculated based on the shell or beam element theory. Knowing the structural stress close to the seam weld the stress in the seam weld can be computed based on engineering formula’s, experimentally determined for each seam weld. The weld properties of standard weld details can be looked up in specific catalogs of the British Standards (BS7608 1993), Eurocode 3, or the International Institute of Welding (IIW).
