Samcef environment > Simcenter Samcef import
Import Nastran data to a current Simcenter Samcef model
In Simcenter Samcef, you can select the Append Merge option from the Import Behavior list in the Solver Deck Append dialog box to parse specific data from a Simcenter Nastran format file (the source file) and add them to a Simcenter Samcef FEM (the destination file).
Simcenter Nastran entities that are parsed and/or imported
The software parses the following entities that exist in the Simcenter Nastran format file:
CTETRA, CHEXA and CPYRAM elements.Note: The software only updates the Simcenter Samcef elements that have the same label and the same topology definition that the given CTETRA, CHEXA and CPYRAM elements that exist in the Simcenter Nastran format file. These parsed elements will not be added to the current model.
PSOLID physical properties bulk cards referenced in the Simcenter Nastran parsed elements.Note: The valid PSOLID cards will be imported into the current Simcenter Samcef model as new Physical Property tables.
The software will parse all the materials of the Simcenter Nastran format file that are referenced in the imported PSOLID cards and that are compatible with the Simcenter Samcef materials. For more information on the Simcenter Samcef materials, see Defining materials for Simcenter Samcef analyses (Simcenter Samcef Structure and Thermal).Note: The valid parsed materials will be imported into the current model.
The software will also parse the material orientation that is defined with the COORD1R, COORD1C, COORD1S, COORD2R, COORD2C, COORD2S coordinate system bulk cards.Note: The coordinate systems will not be imported into the current model.
Creating a new Element Associated Data for each parsed element
The software will add the following data to the Element Associated Data entry of each parsed element:
The material orientation vector.
The Physical Property table that will contain the reference to the material.
Controlling how conflicts in data are handled
You can only use the Add File Data option in the Merge Conflict Resolution Options group.
You can use the Label Offsets options to specify a numerical offset to apply to the label (ID) of each imported entity. As the software does not import nodes, coordinate systems, and elements, you can only use the following options:
Use the Physical Properties label offsets option to specify a numerical offset to apply to the label (ID) of each created Physical Property table.
Use the All Other Entities label offsets option to specify a numerical offset to apply to the label (ID) of each imported material.
Common issues when appending and merging data from a Nastran format file
From more information on these specific issues, see Common issues when importing a model (Simcenter Samcef).
Import summary
At the end of the import, the software will output in the Information window a summary of the parsed and/or imported entities:
Append Physical Properties summary:
%i1 Element(s) have been updated with a Physical Property as Element Associated Data.
%i2 Material(s) have been created and %i3 are required for the Physical Properties.
%i4 Physical Properties have been created.
where
%i1 is the number of updated elements.
%i2 is the number of imported materials and %i3 the number of assigned materials.
%i4 is the number of created Physical Property tables.
