Solution monitoring (Simcenter Samcef)

The Solution Monitor displays information generated by the Simcenter Samcef solver. For example, you can view errors and warnings, and you can watch residual time history graphs for the current analysis.

Solution monitor window

The Solution Monitor lists solver information in several tabs (1).

In Non-Linear and Heat Transfer analyses, the Solution Monitor window also displays XY graphs (2) for specific solver data output.

Solution monitor commands

Command Description
Abort Terminates the analysis. Use this command only when you do not want to keep any of the calculated result files. This option: Does not perform result post processing.Removes all temporary files.
Close Monitor Closes the Solution Monitor window, but the analysis continues until the end.
Stop Stops the analysis. In Non-Linear and Heat Transfer transient analyses, the solver stops after the end of the currently solved timestep. You can post-process results that are available for the saved times. In Linear analyses, the solver immediately stops, and you cannot post-process any result.
Graph (s) Plots graphs that are provided by the solvers.ExportWrites the values displayed in the graph to a CSV file.DismissCloses the graphs window.
Inspect Locks the running message display in the Solution Monitor window and lets you scroll to observe the summary information of previous iterations.

Solution monitor tabs

Tab Description
Log Displays the log file of the solve.
Solver Output Displays the Simcenter Samcef .res solver listing file.
Summary Available when the Parse Data solution monitor option is selected.Displays a short summary of the solve: the run Simcenter Samcef computation modules and their status, and the number of warnings/errors issued per module.
Solver Messages Available when the Parse Data solution monitor option is selected.Lists in real time the warnings and errors that the solver encounters.
Model Description Available when the Parse Data solution monitor option is selected.Describes basic information about the model: the number of degrees of freedom, the different types of elements, the model sizes and masses, and a summary of disk usage. In Non-Linear and Heat Transfer transient analyses, you can also view the subcase definitions (list of times, iterations criteria values, and so on).
Solver Information Available when the Parse Data solution monitor option is selected.Describes global solver information. Depending on the active solution, you can view the following information:In Linear Static analyses: the total potential energy and the total resultant efforts. In Modal, Buckling, and Standalone Buckling analyses: the modal frequencies and generalized masses. In Non-Linear and Heat Transfer transient analyses: the timesteps, the iterations residuals, the number of damaged or plasticized elements, and the contact conditions status.

Graphs

In Non-Linear and Heat Transfer transient analyses, you can click Graph(s) to view XY graphs, for instance:

Graph Note
Time Evolution of the Total Resultant Efforts and Forces
Relative Force Residual Graph of the TESF information in the Simcenter Samcef .res solver listing file.
Relative Energy Residual Graph of the TESE information in the Simcenter Samcef .res solver listing file.
Criterion on residuals
Residual Graph of the PRCR, PRCE, PRCQ, and RES information in the Simcenter Samcef .res solver listing file.
Number of damaged elements If damage laws are defined in materials.
Number of plasticized elements If plastic laws are defined in materials.
Thermal Total Resultant Flux and Reaction

These graphs are plotted as function of iterations for each time step. After the solve, the software saves them in the run directory in PNG format.

You can also export the graph data to a CSV file.

Note:

Their file names are always the same and you cannot change therm. These names are unique because they do not contain the name of the solution. So, if you solve several solutions in the same folder, the graphs of the latest solved solution will overwrite the graphs of any previous one.

Customizing the solution monitor window behavior

You can customize the solver monitor window behavior in the Solver Parameters of the active solution, or in Customer Defaults.

Option Description
Activate Enables solution monitoring.
Keep open after solving Keeps the solver monitoring window open after solving.
Parse data Parses the results file and log file.
Stop Solver when error(s) in Bacon Stops the solve if an error has been detected in the BACON preprocessing phase.
