Post-processing > Post processing element and nodal results

Options for element-nodal results

For element-nodal results, multiple values of the result exist at each node. In general, a different value exists at each node for every element that shares the node.

You can create a contour display of averaged or unaveraged element-nodal results.

  • For unaveraged element-nodal results, the post-processor displays the value of the result for each element that shares the node. Thus, the coloring of the contour display typically varies continuously across individual elements and is discontinuous across element edges and faces.

  • For averaged element-nodal results, the post-processor displays the average of the element-nodal results at each node. Thus, the coloring of the contour display typically varies continuously across individual elements and across element edges and faces.

Calculating invariant results from averaged element-nodal results

When you turn on averaging, post-processing uses the averaged values of the element-nodal vector or tensor results to calculate:

  • The magnitude for vector results like heat flux.

  • The principal values, maximum shear, octahedral shear, and so on for tensor results.

Controlling averaging of element-nodal results

To average element-nodal results, in the Result tab of the Post View dialog box, select Nodes from the Combine At list and then select Average from the Nodal Combination list. By default, the averaging occurs across all elements that share a node. However, you can optionally subdivide the averaging based on any combination of the material and property IDs of the elements, element type, and feature angle.

For more information on these averaging options, see Averaging options for elemental and grid point results.

Controlling nodal combination of element-nodal results

For element-nodal results, you can display several types of Nodal Combination: for more details, see Nodal combination options for element-nodal results.
