Laminate Composites > Inflating laminates
Material orientation and laminate inflation
When you inflate a laminate, the software computes the material orientation vector for each inflated solid element using its orientation in space and the material orientation vector from the original shell element.
The Material Orientation Comparison Angle for CSYS Compaction customer default controls the number of different material orientation vectors that are exported to the solver.
Tip:
To find a customer default, choose File→Utilities→Customer Defaults, and click Find Default .
You use this default to specify the upper limit for the relative angle between material orientation vectors that the software converts to a set of unique coordinate system definitions. For the vast majority of laminate models, the default value of 5° is sufficient. If this angle is too large for your model, some solid elements could have wrong material orientation vectors, as shown in the following graphic.
Material Orientation Comparison Angle for CSYS Compaction too large
Material Orientation Comparison Angle for CSYS Compaction small enough
To let the software compute correct material orientation vectors for these solid elements, specify a smaller value for the Material Orientation Comparison Angle for CSYS Compaction customer default.
Reducing the default value could impact the performance of your analysis.
Note:
For an inflated laminate in pre-NX 8.0.1 versions, set the field interpolation method to Nearest Neighbor for the Extrusion Material Orientation fields to correctly export the material orientation vectors to the structural solver.
