Influence of modeling

To compare the influence of modeling, two solid models are compared. In the first model (following figure, left side), the weld throat is not modeled at all, while in the second model, the weld throat is modeled by modeling the flange (following figure, right side). The fatigue life based on a load history is compared for both models. [3]

Lifetime of a Model Without Flange (left) (472 Blocks) and with a Flange (right) (Min. Life 675 Blocks)

Because the modeling of the throat material distributes the load flow on a larger area, neglecting the flange in the model leads to an overestimation of the damage. But, at least in this case, the overestimation (reduction of lifetime by less than 30%) still lies in a typical scatter range of seam welds. Based on this example it can be concluded that the method shows robustness against modeling influence. This means that this methodology can be used on different seam weld types to compare (for example: single sided, double sided, penetration grades) without re-modeling the whole structure. [3]
