Post-processing > Saving and restoring the state of views

Importing and exporting session files

You can import or export Simcenter 3D Results Viewer session files in Pre/Post. A Simcenter 3D Results Viewer session file is a text file with an .rsfx extension. It contains the information needed to restore the data and appearance of the saved state of the software, including a list of the results, data sources, and layout states. Every session file contains data references that point to the results and data sources.

Importing session files

When you import a session file, the software imports any layout states and renames them if a layout state with the same name already exists. The software displays the active layout state in the graphics window. The Post Processing Navigator and Simulation Navigator display the layouts in the Layout States node along with other layout states you created. The Description column displays the name of the session file.

Imported layout state from the PostProcessingSession_LayoutState session file

The software also loads or replaces any specified data sources and displays them in the Scenario Based Data-Visualization Navigator. Other loaded data sources not related to the imported session file remain loaded.

The state of the data source file can be:

  • Loaded — A data source with the same name, same path, and same options is already loaded. The software keeps the data source already loaded and the layout states use the data source. The software does not load the data source again to preserve the preloaded cached data, which speeds up the display of post-processing scenarios.

  • Not loaded — No data source with the same name is already loaded.

  • Conflict — A data source with the same name but with a different path and options is already loaded. For more information, see Resolving conflicts on import.

Exporting layout states as session file

You can export Pre/Post layout states as a Simcenter 3D Results Viewer session file. To export layout states as a session file, the display can be based only on data from results files.

Resolving conflicts on import

If a conflict occurs when you import a session file, such as another data source with the same name is already loaded, the Apply Session from File dialog box appears and displays the type of conflict. The Already Loaded Data Source group in the dialog box displays the name of the data source already loaded and a set of buttons that let you choose the action to resolve the conflict.

  • Keep Already Loaded — Keep the data source already loaded and do not load the file.If you choose to use the data sources already loaded, the software does not load the data source again and keeps any preloaded cached data, which speeds up the display of post-processing scenarios.

  • Load From File — Replace the existing data source with the file.

  • Keep Both — Keep both data sources. The software keeps the data source already loaded and renames and loads the new one from the file. The imported layout states use the newly loaded data source.

Editing a session file

You can edit a session file like you do a layout state. It has a similar format. For information about the session file format, see Session file content in the Simcenter 3D Results Viewer help.
