Replace a component FEM with superelements (SOL 414)

Follow these steps to replace a FEM component in an assembly FEM with a superelement representation of a rotating part generated by SOL 414,103 Eigenvalues and Superelement Reduction.

  1. Make the assembly FEM file the work and displayed part.

  2. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click a component FEM and choose Edit Representation.

  3. In the FE Model Component Representation dialog box, from the Representation list, choose Nastran Rotor Super Element.

  4. Type a name for this superelement. This name is useful when you use the Superelement Recovery command to restore the superelement to the original model. For example, if you have several occurrences of the same superelement in the model, this name helps you to distinguish between the occurrences of the superelement for which you want to see the results.

  5. (Optional) From the Damping Type list, select the type of damping you want to apply to this superelement, and add the appropriate viscous or hysteretic damping factors in the corresponding boxes.

  6. (Optional) In the Matrices Scaling Factors group, enter the appropriate scaling factors in the corresponding boxes.

  7. In the Superelement File group, type the full path and file name of the .sdb file that contains the superelement results, or click Browse to navigate to and select the file.Note: The .u18 file must be available in the same folder as the .sdb file.

  8. (Optional) If the units are not specified in the superelements file, or if you want to convert the units from the superelements file, select the units for Length and Mass. For example, if the original rotor superelement was created in meters, and now you are working in millimeters, select mm.Note: You cannot change the units after you add the superelement to the assembly FEM file.

  9. From the Display list, select Superelement Symbol.None — Displays only the retained (boundary DOF) nodes.Superelement Symbol — Displays a generic, symbolic representation of the superelement and its retained (boundary DOF) nodes.Note: The Approximation of base FEM option does not apply to rotor superelements.

  10. Click OK.
