How to choose values for Maximum Normalized Velocity Change and Maximum Normalized Pressure Change

In your natural convection problem, choosing best suited values for Maximum Normalized Velocity Change and Maximum Normalized Pressure Change is an iterative process when you freeze the flow field based on the solution evolution.

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the solution node and choose Edit Solver Parameters. The Solution Parameters dialog box opens.

  2. In the 3D Flow Solver tab, under Freeze Flow Field for Transient, select Freeze Flow Field Based on Solution Evolution.

  3. In both the Maximum Normalized Velocity Change and Maximum Normalized Pressure Change boxes, type really small values (10-10).This ensures that the flow does not freeze during the first solve, but the solver writes values for both the maximum normalized velocity change and maximum normalized pressure change in the solver LOG file.

  4. Click OK.

  5. Solve the solution. As the solution is solving monitor the messages that are displayed in the Solution Monitor. For each time step, the following three lines are displayed:Freeze Flow Status                 = Active Maximum normalized velocity change = 1.83E+00 (target =  1.00E-10) Maximum normalized pressure change = 9.27E—04 (target =  1.00E-10)

  6. When your flow solution converged, monitor the maximum normalized velocity change and maximum normalized pressure change values until the change of these values between multiple consecutive time steps is small. Note these values.

  7. Stop the solve.

  8. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the solution node and choose Edit Solver Parameters.

  9. In the Maximum Normalized Velocity Change and Maximum Normalized Pressure Change boxes, type the noted values.

  10. Re-solve the solution.
