Importing tabular data as a parametric line

When you import tabular data from a text file into a table field, the software can normalize the spatial portion of the tabular data from physical coordinates to the parametric u-coordinate if the data points conform to the following requirements:

  • The independent domain of the tabular data contains values for one spatial variable only.

  • The data points collectively represent the points on a line.

  • The tabular data is ordered in ascending or descending order in the text file.

Because the spatial independent domain of the table field that you create is parametric, you can apply the table field to other lines.

To use this capability, when you create the table field, you must select one of the following independent domains: X Axis, Y Axis, Z Axis.

When you import the tabular data, in the Table Data Import dialog box, select the Import Ordered Data as Parametric Line check box.

Creating an ordered text file

Suppose that the tabular data in the data point table represent the points along a line.

Data point table

Data point x Pressure
1 2.00 500
2 3.85 600
3 5.25 850
4 6.75 700

The first data point listed in the text file defines the origin of the parametric u-coordinate. This data point must correspond to an end of the curve.

For example, in the data point table, points 1 and 4 are valid choices for the first data point to list in the text file. The text file to define point 1 as the origin is:

2.00,5003.85,6005.25,8506.75,700

The text file to define point 4 as the origin is:

6.75,7005.25,8503.85,6002.00,500

The remaining data points must be listed sequentially in ascending or descending order. Thus, the following text file cannot be parameterized:

2.00,5003.85,6006.75,7005.25,850

Calculating parametric coordinates of intermediate points

When the software calculates the parametric coordinates of intermediate data points, it calculates the parametric coordinate for a point as the ratio of the distance along the line to the point, to the total length of the line.

For example, suppose that point 1 is the origin. The u-coordinate of points 1 and 4 are known to be 0 and 1, respectively. The software calculates the parametric u-coordinate for points 2 and 3 by computing the ratio of their distance along the line from point 1 to the total length along the line between points 1 and 4.

{u_2} = \frac{{{s_{12}}}}{S} = \frac{{1.85}}{{4.75}} = 0.389.....

{u_3} = \frac{{{s_{12}} + {s_{23}}}}{S} = \frac{{1.85 + 1.40}}{{4.75}} = 0.684.....
