Specifying the mesh parameters for adaptive meshing
In the Adaptivity Meta Solution dialog box, you use the options in the Mesh Parameters group to define the error criteria that the software uses to evaluate the mesh and determine convergence.
Maximum number of iterations
Use the Maximum Number of Iterations option to specify the maximum number of iterations that the adaptive solution process can perform. The software iteratively solves and remeshes the model until the following occurs:
The solution converges.
The software reaches the specified Maximum Number of Iterations.
If you specify 0, the software solves the model and generates results and a node refinement map based on the specified Accuracy Parameters. The software does not remesh the model. Running an adaptive solution process with 0 iterations can be helpful because you can use the node refinement map to examine the areas in the model that require mesh refinement before the software makes any changes to the existing mesh.
Target minimum element length
Use the Target Minimum Element Length to define your desired value for the smallest element edge length in the refined mesh. The software tries to generate elements with edge lengths that are larger than this value. However, in some cases, the software may need to generate elements with edges that are slightly smaller than this length to preserve the overall quality of the mesh.
Maximum Number of Nodes
Use the Maximum Number of Nodes option to specify an upper limit on the number of nodes that the software can generate during the remeshing process. This option lets you place an upper limit on the overall size of the mesh. If the software reaches this limit during the adaptive remeshing process, it terminates the process.
Maximum Element Refinement Level
Use the Maximum Element Refinement Level option to control the extent of refinement that can occur to an element in each adaptive iteration. For example, if you specify a Maximum Element Refinement Level value of 8.0, the software cannot reduce the element’s size during the refinement process to less than 1/8 of its original size at the beginning of the iteration.
After the adaptive process is complete, you can select the Mesh Refinement Level results in the Post Processing Navigator and create a contour plot. The software generates a banded display that indicates the level of refinement necessary at each node based on the computed error results from the adaptive analysis.

Meshing Method
Use the Meshing Method option to specify the remeshing approach to use.
To allow the software to remesh the entire model, select Global. The software deletes the existing mesh and regenerates an entirely new mesh based on the specified Accuracy Parameters and Mesh Parameters.
To restrict the remeshing to the localized areas in the regions where the error values are highest, select Local to restrict the remeshing. To maintain the quality of the overall mesh, the software may smooth the mesh on adjacent areas in which the error values exceed the parameters.Note: If you select Local, the software tries to restrict the remeshing to localized areas. However, in some cases, it is unable to satisfactorily refine the mesh using a local remeshing approach. In those cases, the software switches to global meshing.
