Controlling mesh creation for mode sets

You create a mode set from an existing results file that contains other result types and details about the mesh on which those results were generated. Use the Mesh Creation Mode options in the Mode Set dialog box to control how the software creates the mesh to use in the mode set alternate representation.

Using associated elements to create the mesh

If you select the Associated Elements option, the software imports nodes and elements from the data source file to define the mesh for the alternate representation.

For nodes, the software imports:

  • All nodes that have modal data

  • Any defined fluid or structural grid points.

For elements, the software creates elements during the import process based on the available node data:

  • If the software imports all nodes for an element, the software imports the element as it is in the data source file.

  • If the software imports all nodes for the face of a 3D element, then the software imports the element as a 2D element.

  • If the software imports all nodes of an element's edge, then the software imports the element as a 1D element.

  • If the software cannot create any element based on the imported nodes, then it imports the nodes as unconnected nodes.

Using visualization elements to create the mesh

If you select the Visualization Elements option, the software imports any visualization elements, such as Nastran PLOTEL elements, in the data source file to define the mesh for the alternate representation. Visualization elements have:

  • Selectable nodes that you can use as connection points if you create 1D elastic connections (such as springs or beams) to connect an alternate component representation to other components in an assembly FEM file.

  • No physical properties, mass, or stiffness. The software does not process them in solutions.

For more information, see Visualization elements (PLOTELs) in assembly FEM files.
