Laminate property extraction
When you use a method that involves a laminate such as Composite Plate Buckling Flat Compressive in a margin of safety calculation, you can use the laminate property extractor to:
Define parameters on the Calculation Creation dialog box.
Define conversion factors on the Load Extraction dialog box that correct for incompatibility between the result type that you select for the working load, stress, deflection, and so on, and the result type the method requires.
The laminate property extractor is available after you have selected the laminates for the calculation. These laminates are listed in the Laminate Parameter Property dialog box, in the Parameter group. After you select a laminate from the list, the properties of the laminate from which you can choose are listed in the Properties group. Currently, the only property that you can extract is the total thickness.
Note:
All of the built-in methods that involve laminates require a single laminate only.
When you use the laminate property extractor, rather than copying the value of the laminate property, the software creates a link between the laminate property and the parameter or conversion factor. Thus, if you change the laminate, the value for the laminate property that the software uses in the margin of safety calculation automatically reflects the changed laminate.
The laminate property extractor has the added advantages that it enables you to work more efficiently and helps you to avoid possible calculation and data transcription errors.
As an example of using the laminate extractor, suppose that you are evaluating the margin of safety of a laminate plate against buckling and in the Calculation Method-Selection dialog box you select Composite Plate Buckling Flat Compressive as the method. In the Calculation Creation dialog box, after you use Edit Laminate Extraction to select a laminate, you can use the laminate property extractor to define the loaded and unloaded edge lengths of the plate.
When you define a parameter or conversion factor with the laminate property extractor, the software automatically creates a lookup function for the property. The name of the lookup function appears in the loaded or unloaded edge length box.
For example, if you select a laminate property named Total Thickness for a laminate named laminate, the following text appears in the loaded or unloaded edge length box:
laminateParamProperty("laminate","Total Thickness")
You can use the lookup function in the formula for a user-defined expression. To do so, you can edit the text in the loaded or unloaded edge length box.
For example, to use twice the value for Total Thickness for the loaded or unloaded edge length, enter the following:
2*laminateParamProperty("laminate","Total Thickness")
For information on using expressions, see Expressions.
