Chaining with a modal solution (Simcenter Samcef)

You can chain an active Modal solution with several other solved solutions. In the solution's Chaining page, you select the solved solution you want to chain with and define the chaining parameters.

Option Description
Activate Chaining Activates chaining.
Chaining Type Specifies the chaining type:Modal analysis on a pre-stressed structure—Performs a Modal solution with pre-stress conditions.Vibration modes around the instantaneous configuration—Performs a Modal solution around a nonlinear converged configuration.Chained thermal-structural analysis—Performs a classic Heat Transfer - Modal chaining.Chained thermal-structural analysis with dissimilar mesh—Performs a Modal solution after a Mapping solution.
Source Type Lets you select a Solution already defined in the current model to chain with, or an External File Simcenter Samcef binary file (.u18) to extract chaining data from.

Modal analysis on a pre-stressed structure chaining type

The Modal analysis on a pre-stressed structure chaining type chains a modal solution with a linear static one. In the active modal solution, you select the previous linear solution's load case from which you want to retrieve the pre-stress data.

Option Description
Contact Control Specifies how the contact conditions defined in the linear static solution are handled. Free normal and tangential contact degrees-of-freedom—The status of the contact conditions defined in the linear static solution is ignored in the modal solution. All the contact degrees of freedom are free.Normal contact d.o.f. depends on contact status in the prerequisite solution—The normal contact status (fixed or free) computed in the linear static analysis is maintained in the modal solving.Normal contact and sliding d.o.f. depends on prerequisite solution—The normal and sliding contact status (fixed or free) computed in the linear static analysis is maintained in the modal solving. For more details, see the CONFIX parameter of the .ALGO Samcef command.
The following options apply if either the Normal contact d.o.f. depends on contact status in the prerequisite solution or the Normal contact and sliding d.o.f. depends on prerequisite solution option is selected from the Contact Control list.
Precision Lets you define when a contact degree of freedom is marked as closed. If the reaction of the degree of freedom is greater than the "Precision x the greatest reaction/force on the structure" reference value, the degree of freedom is marked as closed. For more details, see the CONPRE parameter of the .ALGO Samcef command.
***_as.u18 File** Available when you select External File from the Source Type list.Lets you select the Simcenter Samcef binary linear static results file to use as the source for the pre-stress data. For more details, see the IFPR FILE parameters of the .SAM Samcef command.
Load Case Number Lets you select the load case number from which you want to retrieve the pre-stress data. For more details, see the NPR parameter of the .SAM Samcef command.
Chaining with Solution Available when you select Solution from the Source Type list.Lets you select the linear static solution and the load case you want to chain with.

Note:

If the model you chain with contains bolt preloads, you must ensure that these preloads are well taken into account. For more information, see Bolt conditions when chaining solutions (Simcenter Samcef).

Vibration modes around the instantaneous configuration chaining type

The Vibration modes around the instantaneous configuration chaining type chains a nonlinear analysis with a modal one. In the active modal solution, you select a nonlinear solution's converged subcase. This subcase becomes the instantaneous configuration for the modal solve.

***_me.u18 File** Available when you select External File from the Source Type list.Lets you select the Simcenter Samcef binary nonlinear results file to use as source for the instantaneous configuration. For more details, see the INST FILE parameters of the .SAM Samcef command.
Subcase Number Lets you select the subcase number referencing the instantaneous configuration to take into account. For more details, see the NPR parameter of the .SAM Samcef command.
Chaining with Solution Available when you select Solution from the Source Type list.Lets you select in the nonlinear solution and the subcase (solution step) you want to chain with.
Enforced Displacements Control
For a Modal Analysis, appears when Source Type is set to Solution, and Solution is set to a nonlinear solution. For a Standalone Buckling Analysis, appears when Chaining Type is set to Incremental Stability Analysis.
Enforced Displacement Specifies how you want the enforced displacements to be controlled, either by Fixed Degrees of Freedom, or Free (no degrees of freedom).

Note:

  • When the modal solution retrieves the instantaneous configuration from the nonlinear selected subcase, it uses the subcase predicted timestep to evaluate the stability matrices at the end of the subcase. If you selected the latest subcase of the nonlinear solve, you must ensure that time-dependent loads are still defined after the subcase end time. See the Simcenter Samcef documentation for more details on this recommendation.

  • For this chaining, you must select the Generate Output for Modal Analysis check box. For more information, see Chain a nonlinear analysis with a modal analysis (Simcenter Samcef).

Note:

If the model you chain with contains bolt preloads, you must ensure that these preloads are well taken into account. For more information, see Bolt conditions when chaining solutions (Simcenter Samcef).

Chained thermal-structural analysis chaining type

The Chained thermal-structural analysis chaining type chains a thermal analysis with a modal one. In the active modal solution, you select the reference time at which you want to retrieve the nodal temperatures from the thermal solution. These temperatures become thermal loads.

Option Description
Selected Time Lets you select the time at which you want to retrieve the thermal results. For more details, see the TIME parameter of the .GEL Samcef command.Note: The real time from which thermal results are retrieved is the thermal computing (and archiving) time which is the nearest to the specified Selected Time.
Chaining with Solution Available when you select Solution from the Source Type list.Lets you select the thermal solution you want to chain with.
***_mt.u18 File** Available when you select External File from the Source Type list.Lets you select the Simcenter Samcef binary thermal results file to use as the source. For more details, see the IUN FILE parameters of the .SAM Samcef command.

Chained thermal-structural analysis with dissimilar mesh chaining type

The Chained thermal-structural analysis with dissimilar mesh chaining type chains a mapping solution with a modal one. In the active modal solution, you select the reference time at which you want to retrieve the nodal temperatures (and the degree of cure and the glass transition temperatures, if any) from the thermal solution. These results become thermal loads.

Chaining with Solution Available when you select Solution from the Source Type list.Lets you select the mapping solution you want to chain with.
***.txt File** Available when you select External File from the Source Type list.Lets you select the mapping results text file to use as the source.
