Disabling rendering of backface polygons

When you turn on the Backface Culling visualization preference, it disables rendering of backfacing polygons in shaded views. Any surface facets that have normals directed away from the viewer are not rendered. Reducing the number of facets rendered can significantly improve graphics performance, especially on low-end and mid-range graphics devices.

Backface Culling is included in post-processing primarily for displaying stress or strain results on both the top and bottom of 2D elements. However, it is also useful for improving graphics performance with large models. Solid element and beam element displays are not affected by the Backface Culling status, but you should be aware of certain limitations of this setting when working with models containing shell elements.

Backface culling and shell element models

When viewing top and bottom results at shell element recovery points, you must use Backface Culling to display results properly. However, when viewing results at any other shell element location, Backface Culling displays only the top side of shell elements. This can be helpful to quickly determine whether 2D element normals are consistent across your model. (The element is shaded only on the positive normal side.) But you may see unexpected displays when using Backface Culling to improve visualization performance for large models.
