Damage models for Orthotropic materials (Simcenter Samcef)

The Simcenter Samcef damage material models predict the fibers breaking, the matrix cracking, and the decohesion between fibers and the matrix. Delamination between two plies is also taken into account.

When you create orthotropic materials, you can use options on the Damage page in the Samcef Orthotropic Structure material dialog box to model Intra-laminar failure. You can define a progressive damage model for a UD Ply Damage, for an Enhanced UD Ply Damage, for a WF Ply Damage, or for a Rupture with Damage.

UD Ply Damage The UD Ply Damage damage model for a General orthotropic Ply includes 3 damage variables: Damage in the fiber 11 direction.Damage in the transverse 22 direction.Damage linked to the in-plane 12 shear. This law can also take into account:Damage due to the stresses in the 33 direction.Time delay effect.Nonlinearities in the fiber 11 direction depending on either stresses or strains.
Enhanced UD Ply Damage The Enhanced UD Ply Damage (NCF) model extends the classical UD Ply Damage by adding transverse cracking support. You can choose between the PLYENH or PLYENH2 version of that model.
WF Ply Damage In the WF Ply Damage material (Woven Fabrics), the damage is linked to the in-plane 12 shear, coupled with plasticity. This material can also take into account:Damage in the fiber 11 direction.Time delay effect.Nonlinear elastic behavior in the fiber 11 direction.
Rupture with Damage This model is a simple linear model for analyzing fibers rupture. For more information, see Rupture material properties (Simcenter Samcef)

For more information, see the damage ply material, enhanced damage ply material, and woven damage ply material pages in the Simcenter Samcef solver documentation..
