Understanding the strength evaluation
The strength evaluation of your structural model lets you view the following sets of results:
Strength safety factor (SSF)
Margin of safety (MS)
Isotropic strength evaluation
For isotropic materials, the strength safety factor is calculated as follows:
SSF = max [Stress criterion / max(Stress(ti))]
where max(Stress(ti)) is the effective stress for any time ti and the stress criterion is either the ultimate strength or the yield strength.
| Stress-strain curve | Stress Strain Elastic region Plastic region Fracture Yield strength Ultimate strength |
|---|
The effective stress can be one of the following:
Von Mises
Tresca
Maximum Principal
Minimum Principal
For isotropic materials, the margin of safety is calculated as follows:
MS = (SSF/FS - 1) x 100 %
where FS is a specified factor of safety.
The strength safety factor and margin of safety results indicate whether the part will instantaneously fail due to structural loading. If SSF values are less than 1.0 or MS values are negative, structural loading alone will cause the part to fail. No further fatigue evaluation is necessary, and a redesign is recommended.
