Fields > Table fields
Lookup options for fields created from results
When you create a table or reference field from results, you can specify how the software calculates the value for the dependent domain of the field when:
The spatial lookup point lies outside the cloud of points defined by the tabular data.
The non-spatial lookup value lies outside the range defined by the tabular data
If the independent domain is spatial only such as Cartesian, the Values Outside Table list in the Primary Domain group controls how the software behaves when the spatial lookup point lies outside the cloud of points defined by the tabular data.
If you select the Undefined option, the software does not assign a value to the dependent domain of the field.
If you select the Constant option, the software assigns a value to the dependent domain of the field as follows:The software identifies the location on the surface of the cloud of points that is closest to the spatial lookup point. The software interpolates the tabular data to calculate the value for the dependent domain at that location on the surface of the cloud of points. The software uses the interpolated value as the value for the dependent domain of the field for the spatial lookup point.
If the independent domain is non-spatial and spatial such as Time, Cartesian, the Values Outside Table lists in the Primary Domain group and Secondary Domain group control how the software behaves.
If you select Undefined from the Values Outside Table list in the Primary Domain group, the software does not assign a value to the dependent domain of the field when the non-spatial lookup value lies outside the range defined by the tabular data. This behavior occurs regardless of the option you select from the Values Outside of Table list in the Secondary Domain group.
If you select Constant from the Values Outside Table list in the Primary Domain group, the software assigns a value to the dependent domain of the field when the non-spatial lookup value lies outside the range defined by the tabular data and either:The location of the spatial lookup point lies inside the cloud of points defined by the tabular data. The location of the spatial lookup point lies outside the cloud of points defined by the tabular data, but Constant is selected from the Values Outside of Table list in the Secondary Domain group.Otherwise, the software does not assign a value to the dependent domain of the field for the lookup point.
The software calculates the value for the dependent domain at a spatial lookup point that lies outside the cloud of points defined by the tabular data as follows:
The software identifies the location on the surface of the cloud of points that is closest to the spatial lookup point.
The software interpolates the tabular data to calculate the value for the dependent domain at that location on the surface of the cloud of points.
The software uses the interpolated value as the value for the dependent domain of the field for the spatial lookup point.
The software calculates the value for the dependent domain at a non-spatial lookup value that lies outside the range defined by the tabular data as follows:
The software identifies the set of tabular data whose non-spatial variable is closest to the value of the non-spatial variable at the lookup point.
The software identifies the location on the surface of the cloud of points for this set of tabular data that is closest to the location of the lookup point.
The software spatially interpolates the tabular data to calculate the value for the dependent domain at that location on the surface of the cloud of points.
The software uses the interpolated value as the value for the dependent domain of the field for the lookup point.
