Assumptions for the planar head loss correlations

The solver uses several correlations for computing the planar head loss depending on the geometry of the plane impeding the fluid flow moving within the fluid domain. See Screens in the Flow Solver Reference Manual for more information.

Thin perforated plate with sharp edge orifices

The following assumptions are necessary:

  • l/dh < 0.015 where l is the plate thickness and dh is the orifice hydraulic diameter.

  • Red > 105 where Red is orifice Reynolds number computed using the orifice hydraulic diameter.

Thin perforated plate with rounded edge orifices

The following assumptions are necessary:

  • Grid thickness is the same as orifice radius.

  • Red > 103 where Red is orifice Reynolds number computed using the orifice hydraulic diameter.

Thin perforated plate with beveled edge orifices

The following assumptions are necessary:

  • The beveled edge of the orifice is facing the flow.

  • The bevel angle is between 40° and 90°.

  • 0.01 < l/dh < 0.16 where l is the plate thickness and dh is the orifice hydraulic diameter.

  • Red > 104 where Red is orifice Reynolds number computed using the orifice hydraulic diameter.

Metal wire screen

The following assumption is necessary:

  • Red > 103 where Red is orifice Reynolds number computed using the orifice hydraulic diameter.

Silk thread screen

The following assumption is necessary:

  • Red > 500 where Red is orifice Reynolds number computed using the orifice hydraulic diameter.
