Reordering methods in Simcenter Samcef solvers
In Simcenter Samcef structural linear, nonlinear, buckling, and standalone buckling solutions, when you select Sparse from the Solver Type list, you can specify an additional method for reordering equations during pivoting and enhance solver performance.
You select this reordering method when you edit the solution on the Solver Parameters page, in the Advanced group, Equations Reordering Method (.ALGO MMFOPT) list.
| Reordering method | Description |
|---|---|
| METIS | This is the original method proposed by George Karyois and Vipin Kumar at the University of Minnesota.Based on the model's characteristics, this method allocates memory in addition to the global memory allocated for the solve (SAM_ZONE environment variable). This can cause problems if the computer runs out of memory. However, this method has very good performance, which is why it is the recommended choice. This method works in nearly all possible configurations.Note: If the METIS method cannot reorder, we recommend that you reduce the global memory allocated to the solve to allow the METIS method to allocate its own required memory. Try this before you switch to the MMD method. |
| MMD | The MMD method is a variant of the METIS method implemented in the Boeing solver. The Boeing solver requires a minimum amount of memory to run. In contrast to the METIS method, this memory is subtracted from the global memory that is allocated to the solve instead of being added to it. So, the remaining memory available for other operations is reduced, and that can impact solver performance. For instance, the database can start to paginate and the read/write operations are drastically slowed. |
| Auto | The software tries to find the best method.Note: This option is retained for compatibility purposes. We do not recommend using it if the METIS method stops on errors. |
For more information, see the equation reordering methods section of the Simcenter Samcef documentation.
Note:
Information related to these methods is printed in the Simcenter Samcef .res output file so that you can make the right decision before relaunching the solve if one of these methods fails.
