Approaches to generating envelopes
When you create results envelopes, you can use the Approach list in the Results Envelope dialog box to specify the results envelopes to be generated. You can select to create results envelopes through load cases or through load cases and results.
Through Load Cases
The Through Load Cases approach creates a result envelope for each result (result type, component, or location) in the result set across the specified load cases. For example, if you select to envelope Displacement for three components (X, Y, and Z) across three load cases, the software generates three results envelopes, one for each component: (1) X, (2) Y, and (3) Z, respectively.
If you select to envelope Stress – Element-Nodal results, the software creates a results envelope for each component, for a total of 15 results envelopes (XX, YY, and so on). If the results contain beam locations, the envelope operation creates 15 results envelopes for each beam location (recovery point C, recovery point D, and so on).
You can think of the option Through Load Cases as creating a results envelope for every selection below Result Type in the Results Envelope dialog box. For each result type, component, and location, the software generates a results envelope.
To help you quickly generate results envelopes of all results, the Result Type list includes the All Result Types option. When you click the Add Result Specification to the list button, the software loads all the result types into the component list.
Through Load Cases and Results
The Through Load Cases and Results approach creates a results envelope across all results (result types, components, and locations) in the result set across the specified load cases. For example, if you select to envelope the Displacement for three components (X, Y, and Z) across three load cases, the software generates one results envelope.
You can think of the option Through Load Cases and Results as combining all selections below Result Type in the Results Envelope dialog box into one results envelope. For the specified result types, components, and locations, the software generates one results envelope.
Using Through Load Cases and Results with different result types
When using the Through Load Cases and Results approach, if the results in the results list are not of the same type, the software creates a separate results envelope for each. For example, if you select to envelope both Stress - Element-Nodal and Displacement results as shown in the figure:
The software generates two results envelopes: one for stress elements and one for displacement.
