3D swept meshing types

Use the Type menu in the 3D Swept Mesh dialog box to control how the software sweeps the mesh through the selected bodies.

  • Use the Multi Body-Infer Target and Until Target types to sweep a mesh of solid elements through one or more bodies. With these options, the software helps detect the appropriate target faces.

  • Use the Automatic Between and Manual Between types to sweep a mesh of solid elements between bodies. You can also use the Manual Between option to sweep a mesh between faces in the same volume, such as when a volume contains a void space. With these options, you manually select the appropriate target faces..

Multi Body-Infer Target

Select Multi Body-Infer Target to sweep a mesh from a selected source face to a target face that the software determines. You can sweep the mesh through a single body or through multiple individual bodies. If you select source faces from multiple bodies, the software sweeps a separate mesh through each individual body.

In the following graphic, (A), (B), and (C) are source faces which belong to different bodies. When the meshes are generated, notice that the software sweeps a different mesh through each of the bodies.

For more information, see Multi Body-Infer Target and Until Target meshes.

Until Target

Select Until Target to sweep a mesh from a selected source face to a target face that you specify. There are two primary use cases for the Until Target option.

  • In the first case, select Until Target when you want to sweep a 3D mesh from a source face in one body to a target face in another body. In this case, any intervening bodies between the source face and the target face must be contiguous. In the following graphic, (A) is the source face and (B), at the bottom of the model, is the target face. When the mesh is generated, the software sweeps the mesh from the source face, through the intermediate bodies, to the target face.

  • In the second case, select Until Target when you want to sweep a 3D mesh from multiple, connected source faces to a single target face.In the following graphic, (A) shows the source faces on one side of the part, and (B) shows the target face on the opposite side of the part. When the mesh is generated, the software sweeps the mesh of hexahedral elements from the source faces (C) to the target face (D).

For more information, see Multi Body-Infer Target and Until Target meshes.

Automatic Between and Manual Between

Select the Automatic Between or the Manual Between options in the Type list in the 3D Swept Mesh dialog box to create a structured 3D mesh either between two solid meshes, or you can use the Manual Between option to create a structured 3D mesh between faces in a single volume.

You can use the Automatic Between or the Manual Between types to create a mesh of brick or wedge elements even if you do not have any geometry to define a body. For example, if you have a set of assembly components that you need to connect, but you do not have any geometry to represent the connection, you can sweep a mesh of hexahedral elements between the components.

In the following graphic, (A) shows a pressure vessel that contains a void between the outer housing and the inner volumes. Because there is no geometry in the void space, we used the 3D Swept Mesh command with the Automatic Between option to manually sweep a mesh from the interior face of the outer housing to the inner volumes. (B) shows the two layers of hexahedral elements that the software generated in the void.

For more information, see Automatic Between and Manual Between meshes.
