Number and Size on Edge mesh controls

Use the Number on Edge and Size on Edge types of Mesh Control to more precisely control the distribution and size of elements along a selected edge:

• Use the Number on Edge density type to specify the number of elements to create on a selected edge.

• Use the Size on Edge density type to specify the approximate element size on a selected edge.

Number on Edge

Use the Number on Edge density type to specify the number of elements to create on a selected edge. You can use Number on Edge to specify the number of elements to create on one or more edges in a particular surface. The following graphic shows an example of a Number on Edge density type where the Number of Elements option is set to 4.

Number on Edge example

You can use Number on Edge to define an unequal number of elements per side. This is useful when a surface has opposite sides of different lengths, or when you want more elements on a side where you expect high stresses. When you specify an unequal number of elements, the software transitions the mesh with triangular elements. The transition layer is always near the edge with the lower element count.

To specify a lower limit on the element size, select the Minimum Size check box and specify the smallest allowable element edge length along a polygon edge. When necessary, the software reduces the element count to avoid violating the specified minimum size limit.

Size on Edge

Use the Size on Edge density type to specify the approximate element size on a selected edge. With this type, you can use the Location option to choose a specific location along an edge to which to specify the element size.

• If you choose Overall, the software applies the approximate element size to the entire edge or curve you select.

• If you choose Start or End the software applies the approximate element size only to the specified portions of the edge or curve you select.

• If you choose Start and End, you can specify different element sizes for the start and end of the edge or curve.
