Boundary Layer Options group
The Boundary Layer Options group appears in 3D Tetrahedral Mesh and 3D Hybrid Mesh dialog boxes only when you have at least one Boundary Layer mesh control assigned to the selected body.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boundary Layer Element Type | Specifies the type of boundary layer elements: Linear, Parabolic, or Follow Tet Order. Follow Tet Order assigns the 3D solid element type to the boundary layer elements. You can have different types for boundary layer elements and the 3D solid elements. The accepted combinations are:Linear boundary layer elements and linear 3D elements.Linear boundary layer elements and parabolic 3D elements.Parabolic boundary layer elements and parabolic 3D elements.The midnodes for parabolic boundary layer elements are not projected on the surface. | ||||||||
| Insert Blend Elements | Inserts blend elements to go around the external corner. Insert Blend Elements Insert Blend Elements****Blending AngleSpecifies the blending angle for creating blend elements. The software creates blending elements when the angle between two adjacent boundary layer faces is greater than the specified value. Enter a value between 30° and 180°.Blending Angle = 120In this example, the angle between the normals of the left adjacent boundary layer faces is 155° > 120° and on the right it is 115° < 120°.Sweep AngleDefines the maximum angle that a given blend element can span. Enter a value between 1° and the Blending Angle value.Sweep Angle = 45Sweep Angle = 15 | Insert Blend Elements | Insert Blend Elements | Sweep Angle = 45 | Sweep Angle = 15 | ||||

| Control Aspect Ratio of Exposed Sides | Controls the maximum aspect ratio allowed for boundary layer element sides exposed to the internal body volume. Aspect ratio = element size ÷ element thicknessEnter a value between 0.001 and 100 000.0 in the Maximum Exposed Aspect Ratio box.The software trims any element with an aspect ratio greater than the specified value and transitions to the solid mesh using tets and pyramids. | Control Slender Boundary Layer Elements | Prevents slender boundary layer elements. You need to specify a value for the minimum aspect ratio allowed in the boundary layers. Enter a value between 0.0 and 10.0 in the Minimum Aspect Ratio box.The thickness of a slender element is much larger than its base size. The software scales the total boundary layer height by removing layers of elements which have an aspect ratio lower than the specified minimum aspect ratio value. | Maximum Imprint Dihedral Angle | Defines the maximum dihedral angle between the boundary layer face and an adjacent non-boundary layer face. When the angle is less than the specified value, the software imprints boundary layer elements on the non-boundary layer face. When the angle is greater than the specified value, the boundary layer grows away from the adjacent face and does not imprint on it. Enter a value between 90° and 180°.Maximum Imprint Dihedral Angle = 120Maximum Imprint Dihedral Angle = 160In this example, the left angle (1) is 25° and the right angle (2) is 155°. When the maximum imprint dihedral angle is 120°, only the boundary layer on the left side imprints on the bottom face. When the maximum imprint dihedral angle is 160°, both boundary layers imprint. | Maximum Imprint Dihedral Angle = 120 | Maximum Imprint Dihedral Angle = 160 | ||||||

| Gradation Rate | Adjusts the rate at which boundary layer height can vary when two adjacent boundary layers have different parameters. A larger value allows a greater change in height between the two boundary layers. Enter a value greater than 0.0 and less or equal to 10.0.Gradation Rate = 3****Gradation Rate = 0.5 | ||||||||
| Smoothing Distance Factor | Sets the distance over which smoothing can occur. The location of the boundary layer nodes are moved to smooth problematic areas when there are potential boundary layer conflicts or collisions such as corners.Enter a value between 0 and 10. Larger values extend smoothing farther away from problematic areas. A value of 0.0 disables the smoothing.Smoothing Distance Factor = 0Smoothing Distance Factor = 2Smoothing Distance Factor = 5 | Smoothing Distance Factor = 0 | Smoothing Distance Factor = 2 | Smoothing Distance Factor = 5 | |||||
| Smoothing Distance Factor = 0 | Smoothing Distance Factor = 2 | Smoothing Distance Factor = 5 | |||||||
