Deformation dialog box

The Deformation dialog box also appears as a tab within the Post View dialog box.

Option Description
Deformation Displays the deformed model. No options in the dialog box are available if this is not selected.
Result
Deform by Available for models that include 2D shell elements.VectorDeforms the model display based on a vector component or magnitude, such as displacement or heat flux, and applies the deformations in the direction of that component or, in the case of magnitude, along the vector itself.ScalarDeforms the model display based on nodal scalar results, such as Pressure – Nodal, and applies the deformations along the shell normal direction.
Deform Shell Elements by Normal Component Available for models that include 2D shell elements when Deform by is set to Vector.Specifies whether the deformation should be applied in the shell normal direction.
Synchronize Color Display and Deformation Ensures that the color plot and deformations are synchronized when you use Next Mode/Iteration and Previous Mode/Iteration to step through modal or optimization results.
Mode/Iteration list Appears when there are multiple load cases, modes, iterations, or time steps.Displays the load case (linear statics solutions), mode (modal solutions), iteration (optimization solution processes), or time step (nonlinear solutions) used for the deformation.
Results list Specifies the result type to display for the deformation. Available results depend on the analysis type and the specified output requests.
Component list Specifies the result component to display for the deformation. Available components depend on the result type.
Complex Options Determines the value displayed at nodes for results in complex format:RealDisplays the real part of the complex result at nodes. ImaginaryDisplays the imaginary part of the complex result at nodes.AmplitudeDisplays the absolute amplitude of the complex result at nodes.Signed AmplitudeDisplays the signed amplitude of the complex result at nodes. At Phase AngleDisplays the value at nodes of the complex result at a specified phase angle. Enter a phase angle in degrees in the text box.
Scale Specifies a scaling factor for deformation. Select from the following and type a value in the text box:% ModelDisplays the relative deformation of the model, where the maximum deformation is scaled to a specified percentage of the model size.AbsoluteDisplays the deformation as the absolute deformation in model units multiplied by a specified scale factor.
Reference Node Transforms and scales deformations with respect to a selected node on the model.
Method Appears when the Reference Node check box is selected.Specifies the method for selecting a reference node.Pick from ModelEnables you to select a node in the graphics window.By Node/Entity IDEnables you to select a node or entity by entering its ID.
Node/Entity Label Available when Method is set to By Node ID or By Entity ID.Specifies the ID for the node or entity to select. Type the ID number in the box and click Apply ID String .
Select Node/Element-Node Appears when Selection Mode is set to Pick from Model. Lets you select the reference node in the graphics window.
Mark IDs Appears when the Reference Node check box is selected.Displays the ID of each selected element or node in the graphics window.
Clear Highlights Appears when the Reference Node check box is selected.Removes all the identifying labels or IDs from the display of the model. Clear Highlights does not clear the selection of elements or nodes.Note: The identifying labels or IDs return if you select more entities and the Mark IDs check box is selected.
Clear Selection Appears when the Reference Node check box is selected.Clears the selection of all elements or nodes and clears the Selectionbox.
Reference DeformationWhen you perform a modal analysis on a prestressed structure, the reference deformation is the initial deformation you select for your modal analysis.
Deform with Specifies the method for determining the reference deformation.NoneThe software applies no initial deformation.DefaultThe software determines the initial deformation, as follows:For Samcef modal results, the software uses the initial deformation that is specified in the results file. For all other solvers, the software selects the first non-modal deformation from the previous non-modal step or subcase. For example, if the contour plot result is a von Mises stress in subcase 2, the software selects the displacement in subcase 1.SelectThe software displays and populates mode and iteration, results, and component lists with the existing results so that you can select the initial deformation.
Mode/Iteration list Appears when Deform with is set to Select.Specifies the load case, mode, iteration, or time step result to which you want to apply the initial deformation.
Results list Appears when Deform with is set to Default or Select. Shows the result type that is displayed in the contour plot. This list is for your reference and is read only.
Component list Appears when Deform with is set to Default or Select. Shows the result component that is displayed in the contour plot. This list is for your reference and is read only.
Scale Appears when Deform with is set to Default or Select.Specifies a scaling factor for the reference deformation. Select from the following and type a value in the box:% ModelDisplays the relative deformation of the model, where the maximum deformation is scaled to the specified percentage of the model size.AbsoluteDisplays the deformation as the absolute deformation in model units multiplied by the specified scale factor.
Show undeformed model Displays the undeformed model in gray superimposed on the deformed model.
The following options are available when Show undeformed model is selected.
Edges Specifies the display of edges in the undeformed model display. Select from the following options:ExternalDisplays external element edges onlyFeatureDisplays the edges of geometry features.WireframeDisplays all element edgesNoneHides all element and feature edges.Click the Color palette to change the edge color.
Faces Specifies the display of element free faces in the undeformed model display. Select from the following options:NoneHides element faces. OpaqueDisplays opaque free faces that are solid filled. TranslucentDisplays translucent free faces. Note: You must enable translucency to view translucent faces. To enable translucency, choose PreferencesVisualization. Click the Visual tab and select the Translucency check box.Click the Color palette to change the element free face color.
