Meshing > Morphing a mesh
Comparing the manual morphing node distribution methods
In the Manual Morph dialog box, when you use either the Node to Edge or Node to Face methods for mapping nodes to geometry, you must select a Distribution Method option to specify how the software should distribute the nodes along the edge or surface.
The following graphics illustrate the differences between these distribution methods using a very simple, planar mesh of quadrilateral elements. Note that the elements are biased towards the lower left corner.
In this example, a simple, sine wave was added to the planar face. (1) shows the surface with the sine wave added. (2) shows a side view of the original mesh juxtaposed with the updated surface. (3) shows a frontal view of the mesh and updated face.
The Manual Morph command was then used to map the existing planar mesh onto the modified surface. The following table shows the meshes that result from different combinations of the Distribution Method options for Node to Edge and Node to Face mappings.
| Mesh | Distribution method for Node to Edge mapping for the bottom and left edges | Distribution method for Node to Edge mapping for the top and right edges | Distribution method for Node to Face mapping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep Bias | Uniform Distribution | Closest Point | |
| Keep Bias | Uniform Distribution | Along Vector Here, the selected vector pointed from the bottom left of the face towards the top right. | |
| Keep Bias | Uniform Distribution | Based on Edge Node Movement | |
| Keep Bias | Uniform Distribution | Along Element Normal | |
| Keep Bias | Keep Bias | Based on Edge Node Movement |
In this case, the mesh in which the Keep Bias distribution method was used for all edges and the Based on Edge Node Movement option was used for the face yields the morphed mesh with the best overall quality.
