Element-associated data

Video: Define a nodal thickness along a set of curves

Use the Element Associated Data command to define element attributes, including material orientation, mass, spring stiffness, and beam section orientation, directly on a selected element or subset of elements within a mesh. If element properties are also defined at the mesh level (for more information, see Mesh-associated data), you can set the element-associated data to override the mesh data.

Note:

All element-associated data for a given mesh is lost when you update the mesh.

In complex models, you may have multiple different element types that all have element-associated data. You can use options in the Element Associated Data Manager dialog box to manage and modify the associated data for all these different element types in a spreadsheet-like interface. For more information, see Managing element-associated data.

You can also override element-associated data (and mesh-associated data) in the Simulation file using the Override Element Attributes dialog box. For more information, see Override element attributes.

The available attribute types depend on the solver and element type (for a list of supported attributes, see Element and mesh attributes).

Optimization of common element attributes on import

When you import a solver input file, common element attributes for a given mesh are combined and imported as mesh-associated data. Unique element attributes are imported as element-associated data.

For example, if you import a mesh of 100 shell elements, in which 90 have the same material orientation vector defined, that common material orientation vector is imported as a mesh attribute and stored as mesh-associated data. The 10 remaining material orientation vectors are imported as element attributes and stored as element-associated data. The import process performs this optimization for each element attribute type (shell element thickness, mass, spring stiffness, material orientation vector, or beam section orientation) for each mesh.
