Fiber alignment methods

You can align fibers using any of the following:

  • A vector

  • A coordinate system

  • Seed curves

Draping orientations using vectors

For the unidirectional draping solver, you specify one vector that defines the fiber orientation at the start point.

For the woven draping solver, you specify up to two vectors. The first vector that you specify defines the warp orientation at the start point. The second vector defines the weft orientation. Instead of specifying a second vector, you can let the software compute the weft direction. The weft direction depends on how you define the material of the ply.

Draping orientations using a coordinate system

For the unidirectional draping solver, the primary fiber direction is aligned with the X-axis (1).

For the woven draping solver, the primary fiber direction is aligned with the X-axis (1) and the secondary fiber direction is aligned with the Y-axis (2).

Primary draping orientation using seed curves

You can align fibers with geometric features such as the edge of a face. To construct the seed curve, you can select polygon edges, element edges, or both. The constructed seed curve must be one continuous curve. The start point for the draping can lie anywhere on the seed curve.

The following example shows a seed curve constructed by selecting three element edges and one polygon edge.

Angular offsets of plies oriented using the seed curve method are ignored. The solver assumes that the fiber follows the tangent direction of the seed curve.
