Load Case Filtering overview

Simcenter 3D Load Case Filtering is a solution process that allows you to use the results of a Simcenter Nastran SOL 101 linear static or SOL 144 aeroelastic static analysis to determine the most critical load cases for your solution. You can then use the load case filtering results to identify those load cases that are problematic and subsequently refine your designs.

You can also use the results to create a new load case set for use with a margin of safety solution. In this way, you can use load case sets from a load case filtering solution in a margin of safety solution, or vice versa.

When you use a load case filtering solution process to obtain a list of the most critical load cases, you must define the following:

  • A criterion that filters load cases into a new subset of critical load cases.Criteria for load case filtering are referred to as methods. You can select from built-in methods or create your own.You select the method when you create a calculation. For more information, see Load case filtering calculations.

  • Load case sets created from linear static structural analysis subcase results. Each subcase represents a load and constraint combination. These are the cases you can evaluate using the load case filtering solution process. For more information, see Load case sets (load case filtering). When you use the results from a SOL 101 linear static analysis, you can also use combined load cases, which are created from a linear combination of results from individual subcases. For more information, see Combined load cases.

  • The results to use in the calculation. You can obtain the results from the analysis results. Doing so requires the following:The result type and, if applicable, the component of the result type in the calculation. The nodes or elements from which to retrieve the results. You can select nodes directly or indirectly by selecting underlying geometry, groups, or selection recipes.

  • A tolerance or tolerances to use in the calculation. You specify the tolerances directly in the calculation. When you specify a tolerance, you specify a percentage and all the load cases that fall within that percentage are selected.

Load case filtering results

When the load case filtering calculation is completed, you can examine the filtering results in the following ways:

  • View results in a table in the Load Case Filtering Results dialog box.

  • View annotations that display the results in the graphics window.

  • View the filtered results in the calculation log.

  • View results as XY coordinates for loads in a 1D or 2D plane in a .csv file.

For more information, see Load case filtering results.

Load case filtering solution in the Simulation Navigator

Load case filtering solutions and their corresponding load case sets and calculations are listed in the Simulation Navigator and are associated with a parent Simulation file. Load case filtering results are stored in the parent Simulation file. When you open the parent Simulation file, any associated load case filtering solutions open as well. When you make changes to the parent Simulation file that cause the linear static analysis results to change, you must rerun the load case filtering solution so that the load case filtering results reflect the changes.

Note:

Load case filtering solutions create links to results. After you rerun a linear static solution from which you renamed or deleted subcases that the load case filtering solution uses as load cases, and you rerun the load case filtering solution, the links break. Thus, the software can no longer access the results it needs to run a load case filtering solution for the existing load cases. In such situations, the load cases used by the load case filtering solution are considered as orphans. For more information on such a situation, see Orphan load cases (load case filtering).
