Create a margin of safety calculation

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click Calculations and choose Create Calculation.

  2. In the Calculation Creation dialog box, in the Description group, click Select a method .

  3. In the Calculation - Method Selection dialog box, in the Method Selection group, from the Name list, click the method.

  4. (Optional) To access technical information on the method you selected, in the Description group, click Show method documentation .A window opens that describes the method and defines parameters such as physical dimensions and material properties that you must define for the method.

  5. Click OK.The Calculation Creation dialog box appears.

  6. (Optional) To rename the calculation, in the Description group, in the Name box, type the new name for the calculation.

  7. (Optional) To add a description for the calculation, in the Description group, click Show Description . In the box, type a description for the calculation.

  8. In the Sources and Annotation group, click Add a new source .

  9. From the Type list, select the type of geometric or FE entity from which you want to create the source for the calculation.

  10. In the graphics window, select the geometric or FE entities. After you finish selecting entities, in the Sources and Annotation group, click Confirm source edit .The source appears in the Sources table.

  11. (Optional) To create an annotation in the graphics window for the calculation, in the Annotation group, select the Generate annotations check box.In the Simulation Navigator, the check box next to a calculation indicates that the calculation has an annotation and that the annotation appears in the graphics window. To hide the annotation, deselect the check box.

  12. In the Inputs group, select a load case set from the list, or click to create a new load case set.

  13. In the Inputs group, on the Inputs tab, define the parameters for the method. The information you need to define the parameters is described in the documentation that you can optionally select in step 4.For more information on your options to define these parameters, see Margin of safety calculations.

  14. Do one of the following:To extract the values to use in the calculation directly from the analysis results, click Load Extraction .For a detailed example of this step when you select an allowable method, see Create a margin of safety calculation using an allowable method. For a detailed example of this step when you select Bolt shear as the method, see Bolt shear method example. For a detailed example of this step when you select Column Euler as the method, see Column Euler method example. To manually define the values to use in the calculation, click the down arrow and select Manual Input . Then click Edit Manual Input .To extract the values to use in the calculation from a nodal force report, click the down arrow and select Nodal Force Report. Then click Edit Nodal Force Report. For a detailed example of this step, see Nodal force report extraction example.

  15. Click OK to close the Calculation Creation dialog box.The calculation appears in the Simulation Navigator under the Calculations node.
