Controlling plasticity and creep effects

To include plasticity and creep effects in the solution, select the Material Nonlinearity check box in the Solution dialog box:

  • When this check box is selected, creep and plasticity are included in the solve for all subcases. To disable creep or plasticity for individual subcases, create a Nonlinear Control Parameters modeling object that disables the creep or plasticity, and apply that modeling object to the desired subcases. For example, you might want to disable creep and plasticity for bolt preload/assembly subcases to save computation time.

  • When this check box is cleared, plasticity and creep are not included in the solve regardless of creep and plasticity settings in the Nonlinear Control Parameters modeling object.

Note:

For SOL 401 and Multi-Step Nonlinear (Multiphysics), to disable the creep and plasticity effects for individual elements or for physical property tables, include a Material Override simulation object in the solution.

Corresponding Nastran syntax

The Material Nonlinearity option for the solution corresponds to the Simcenter Nastran MATNL parameter.

The Nonlinear Control Parameters for creep and plasticity correspond to the Simcenter Nastran CREEP and PLASTIC parameters on the NLCNTL bulk entry (SOL 401 and Multi-Step Nonlinear (Multiphysics)) and the NLCNTL2 bulk entry (SOL 402).

The Material Override simulation object corresponds to the Simcenter Nastran MATOVR bulk entry.

Visualizing the number of plastified and creep elements

For SOL 402, you can view the evolution of plastified and creep elements during an analysis on the Number of Plastified Elements and Number of Creep Elements graphs in the Solution Monitor. These curves are helpful when you want to know, for example, the total number of elements for which creep started, or how the number of creep elements changes as the solution converges.

Both graphs are always available in the Solution Monitor. To ensure that the Solution Monitor is available during the solve, see Disable or enable the Solution Monitor.
