Element size for acoustic analysis
In all meshing dialog boxes where you can enter length as a parameter, you can define the size of an element by specifying the maximum frequency, rather than the length of an element edge. In acoustic analysis, a direct relationship exists between element size and maximum frequency. The following equation expresses this relationship:
element size = speed of sound/(maximum frequency value * the number of elements per wavelength)
As a general guideline, six elements per wavelength offers a reasonable compromise between solution accuracy and the overall size of the mesh. To compute the maximum element size, you convert the maximum frequency to the maximum wavelength and divide by 1/6.
Note:
You can always refine the mesh in regions that are particularly critical to the analysis.
Function for defining element size by a frequency
To define element size by specifying a maximum frequency, you can use the SizeForAcoustics function in the Element Size box in supported dialog boxes. After you define the required maximum frequency value, you can use the following optional arguments to specify values for:
Speed of sound (soundVel)
The maximum number of elements per wavelength (elemPerWavelength)
If you do not specify values for the speed of sound or the number of elements per wavelength, the software uses default values. You can use the Acoustic Parameters customer defaults to adjust these default values.
