Extract the area from a beam cross section

This procedure shows you how to extract the area from a beam cross section for use in a margin of safety calculation.

Note:

This procedure begins with the Calculation Creation dialog box open and a method selected that requires you to define a parameter for a cross section property of a beam, such as Column Euler.

1. From the Area (A) list, select Property Extractor .

2. From the Extraction list, select Beam Cross Section Property.

3. From the Type list, select Beam Section.

4. Click Select a Beam Section .

5. In the Beam Section Manager dialog box, from the Cross Section List, select a beam cross section.

6. Click Close.

7. In the Property Extractor dialog box, click Confirm source edit .

8. From the Properties list, select a section property.The Properties list displays a list of the section properties that have area as their dimensions. If you are extracting a different property from a beam cross section, such as bending inertia, the Properties list displays a list of the section properties that have bending inertia as their dimensions.The Extraction box displays the value you selected from the Properties list.

9. Click OK.The software populates the Area (A) box in the Calculation Creation dialog box with an expression that associates the area with the beam cross section.
