Getting started > Migrating existing NX data to latest version
Migrating combination files
Prior to NX 4, you could combine Motion and Simulation data in one large combination file. In the latest version of NX, this data is distributed among multiple files, and the relationships between files are tracked and managed.
Note:
All references to “the Simulation application” refer to either Design Simulation or Pre/Post.
When migrating combination files, the application that the files open in depends on the application you are in when you open the pre-NX 4 combination files:
If you open a pre-NX 4 combination file in Gateway, the software switches to the Simulation application.Note: If you are a Motion user, you should perform all File operations from within the Motion application.
If you open a pre-NX 4 combination file in Motion, the software remains in the Motion application.
If you open a pre-NX 4 combination file in the Simulation application, the software remains in the Simulation application.
NX 3 to latest version
When you open an NX 3 file combo.sim in the latest version of NX, the software automatically opens the following parts:
combo_i.prt is the original idealized part file. In previous releases, the idealized part file was implicit and hidden. In the latest version, the idealized part file is a separately manageable file.
combo_f.fem is a new FEM file. The FEM file represents the idealized part geometry as tessellated polygon geometry. It also includes all mesh data.
combo_s.sim is a new Simulation file. This is not the same file as your NX 3combo.sim file. The Simulation file contains loads and boundary conditions, overrides, and results.
combo_m.sim is a renamed copy of the original combination file containing the Motion data.
In addition, the software creates a backup of your original NX 3 combo.sim file. You can retrieve your original data from this backup file if for any reason there's a problem with the migrated data.
Note:
If you are using Teamcenter Integration to migrate data, no backup file is created. Teamcenter Integration uses its own mechanisms to track and restore version-controlled data.
NX 2 and earlier to latest version
When you open an NX 2 or earlier file combo.prt in the latest version of NX, the software automatically opens the following parts:
combo_i.prt is the original idealized part file. In previous releases, the idealized part file was implicit and hidden. In the latest version, the idealized part file is a separately manageable file. This is not your original NX 2 combo.prt file.
combo_f.fem is a new FEM file. The FEM file represents the idealized part geometry as tessellated polygon geometry. It also includes all mesh data.
combo_s.sim is a new Simulation file. The Simulation file contains loads and boundary conditions, overrides, and results.
combo_m.sim is a renamed copy of the original combination file containing the Motion data.
In addition, the software creates a backup of your original pre-NX 3 combo.prt file. You can retrieve your original data from this backup file if for any reason there's a problem with the migrated data.
Note:
If you are using Teamcenter Integration to migrate data, no backup file is created. Teamcenter Integration uses its own mechanisms to track and restore version-controlled data. See CAE migration utility for more information.
