Save a results envelope to a field

To create a field from a results envelope:

  1. Choose Results tab→Results Manipulation group→Envelope .

  2. In the Results Envelope dialog box, in the Methods group, from the Operation list, select the type of envelope operation to perform.

  3. From the Approach list, select how to generate results envelopes:Through Load Cases — Creates a results envelope for each result (result type, component, or location) in the result set across the specified load cases. Note: To help you quickly create results envelopes, the Result Type list is automatically set to All Result Types, and the Component list is not available. Through Load Cases and Results — Creates a results envelope across all results (result types, components, and locations) in the result set across the specified load cases. If the selected results are not of the same type, the software creates a separate results envelope for each type. Note: Because you define the results to be enveloped across the type, component, or location level, the All Result Types option in the Result Type list is not available. For more information about the different approaches, see Approaches to generating envelopes.

  4. To generate additional results sets that map the envelope values at nodes or elements to the components and locations of the iteration, load case, mode, or time step that contributed the specified result, select the Output ID Results check box. See Identifying results contribution for envelope displays.

  5. In the Scope group, from the Type list, select from where to envelope the results, the entire model or a subset.To output the results for the entire model, select Full Result Model.To output the results of selected nodes or elements, select Nodes or Elements. Click Select Node or Select Elements and select the nodes or elements from the graphics window.To output the results in a specified selection recipe, select Selection Recipe. Click Select Object and select the selection recipes from the graphics window.

  6. In the Result Definition group, select the result set to envelope depending on the type of results:From the Result list, select a solution or imported results.From the Load Case list, select a step, load case, or subcase.Or, select All Subcases to quickly select all load cases for the selected result set.From the Iteration list, select a mode or time step.Or, select All Iterations to quickly select all iterations for the selected result set.From the Result Type list, select a result type, such as stress or displacement.Or, select All Result Types to quickly select all result types for the selected result set.From the Component list, select a result component or derived value, such as magnitude.Or, select one of the following to quickly select all actual, not derived, result components.For nodal results, select All 3 Components to select the X, Y, and Z components. For elemental or element-nodal results, select All 6 Components to select the XX, YY, ZZ, XY, YZ, and ZX components.If the solution contains beam or shell elements or plies and layers, select the results.Or, select one of the following to quickly select all actual beam or shell locations.For beam elements, select All Beam Locations to select the Recovery, C, D, E, and F locations. For shell elements, select All Shell Locations to select the locations Top, Bottom, Average, and Bending locations. If the solution contains complex results, from the Complex list, choose the complex part or component.Optionally, specify a coordinate system or specify units.

  7. Click Add Result Specification to the list .The specified result type and component for the selected load case and iteration is listed in the result specifications list box.

  8. Add additional results.

  9. (Optional) To specify averaging calculations for elemental or element-nodal results, click Results Combination and do the following:From the Combine At list, select Nodes or Elements.If you selected Nodes, in the Nodal Combination group, select the appropriate check box to include or exclude elements in the averaging. To exclude elements that reference different material property IDs, clear the MIDs check box. To exclude elements that reference different property IDs, clear the PIDs check box. To exclude elements of different types, such as shell or solid elements, clear the Element Type check box. To exclude elements on different sides of a feature edge when the feature angle exceeds a specified value, clear the Feature Angle check box and enter a value in the Feature Angle box.If you selected to include feature angles, to use results for elements that have free faces, click the Include Internal Elements check box.Click OK.

  10. In the Unit System group, select the units in which to output the results. To inherit the units system used in the specified results set, select From Result and select a loaded results set from the list.To specify the results units in which the results are imported, select User Defined. Click Change to select new units from the Result Units dialog box.To let the software infer the output results system from the current part or results file, select Input.

  11. In the Error Handling group, from the Incompatible Results list, select how to treat incompatible data at nodes or elements in any of the selected components or result type. To ignore nodes or elements where the component or result type contain incompatible data, select Skip. To abandon the operation, select Abort.

  12. In the Error Handling group, from the No Data list, select how to treat selected components or result types when data at nodes or elements is absent or incomplete. To ignore the node or element where the component or result type data is missing, select Skip.To output a value of zero for the missing data, select Zero-fill.

  13. From the Output Type list, select Create Field.

  14. In the Name box, type a name for the field, and optionally type a label and description.

  15. From the Independent Domain group, select the independent domains for the output locations depending on the type of results. Choose from the following:Cartesian — Sets the independent domain to the global Cartesian coordinates of node locations.Nodal Results — Sets the independent domain to the IDs of identified nodes.Element ID — Sets the independent domain to the IDs of identified elements.Element-Node ID — Sets the independent domain to the IDs of identified nodes and elements.

  16. Click OK.
