Understanding the Snap Tolerance value

The Snap Tolerance on the Meshing Preferences dialog box is a geometric tolerance that is used in several meshing and geometry abstraction functions. It is primarily used by the calculations of the Auto Element Size tool. Specifically, the software uses 1.5*( the specified Snap Tolerance) as the lower limit for the estimated element size. See Understanding the Automatic Element Size calculation for more information.

The Snap Tolerance is also used in several other pre-processing commands. For example, the software uses the Snap Tolerance as the default value for the Minimum Element Length value in the Auto Heal Geometry dialog box. The software also uses it as an internal snap tolerance for the Mesh Point command. If you try to create a mesh point close to the end of an edge, and the distance between the mesh point and the vertex is less than the Snap Tolerance, the software creates the mesh point on the vertex instead.
