Lookup functions in expressions

The following table lists the lookup functions that are commonly used in formulas for CAE expressions. In the table, curve name, field name, point name, and variable name are text string names of curves, fields, points, and variables, respectively. Because curve names, field names, point names, and variable names are string constants, they must be enclosed in quotes as indicated in the table. In the table, v is used to denote a dimensional or dimensionless numerical argument for the function.

Lookup functions

Function Description Comments
DR(“point name”) Returns the radial displacement of the input point (1) The DR(“point name”) function is results dependent.
DX(“point name”)DY(“point name”)DZ(“point name”) Returns the X, Y, or Z-displacement in the absolute Cartesian coordinate system at the input point (1) The DX(“point name”), DY(“point name”), and DZ(“point name”) functions are result dependent.
FD(“field name”,argument1,......) Returns the value for a field Arguments for the FD function are optional. For more information, see Fields in expressions.
FDM(“field name”,argument1,argument2,argument3) Returns the value for a field The FDM function is only valid for fields with spatial domains. All three arguments for the FDM function are required. For more information, see Fields in expressions.
GAPD(“point name”) Returns the local gap distance at the input point The GAPD(“point name”) function is results dependent.
R(“point name”) Returns the radial distance from the axis of rotation to the input point
RLD(“curve name”) Finds the minimum distance from the current context location to the curve or query curve named in the argument. If no current context location, finds the minimum distance from the origin to the curve or query curve named in the argument. The software allows multiple curves and query curves with the same name. In that case, the RLD function returns the shortest distance among all distances of the curves and query curves with the same name.
RS(“point name”) Returns the rotational speed at the input point
TEMP(“point name”) Returns the temperature of the solid at the input point
THICK(“point name”) Returns the thickness at the input point
UG_VAR(“variable name”) Returns the current value for a variable
X(“point name”)Y(“point name”)Z(“point name”) Returns the X, Y, or Z-coordinate in the absolute Cartesian coordinate system at the input point
YIELD(v) Uses the material properties of an element to return the yield strength for an element at the temperature specified by the argument.(2) The YIELD function is intended for use in results probes. In a result probe, the software has implicit knowledge of which element is being evaluated for yield strength and can access the material properties for the element.
(1) Input point displacements are interpolated from nodal displacements. (2) Valid units for the argument are C, F, K, and R. Units for temperature differences are invalid. If the argument is dimensionless, the software assumes the base unit for temperature in the yield strength look up.
