Specify a preferred material for a part or FEM

For a given part file or FEM, you can specify a material as preferred, for pre-filtering the list of materials in dialog boxes such as Assign Materials, Manage Materials, and Material Library Manager. This ability lets you ensure that the correct material is assigned when other designers assign materials to bodies or CAE physical property tables.

  1. Open the Customer Defaults dialog box and navigate to GatewayMaterials/Mass.

  2. Click the Attributes tab.

  3. In the Preferred Material group, in the Attribute Title Alias box, enter a name for your preferred material attribute. The default name is MaterialPreferred. This attribute will appear in the list of attributes that you can assign to the part or FEM.

  4. From the Preferred Material Library list, select the material library in which your preferred material resides. For example, select Default Material Library to add a standard library material as the preferred material.

  5. Close the Customer Defaults dialog box and restart the software to apply the changes.

  6. Open the part file or FEM for which you want to specify the preferred material.

  7. Choose MenuFileProperties. The Displayed Part Properties dialog box appears.

  8. In the Context group, from the Interaction Method list, select Traditional.

  9. In the Part Attributes group, from the Category (optional) list, select Materials.

  10. From the Title/Alias list, select the name of your preferred material attribute that you defined in Customer Defaults. For example, if you used the default attribute name, select MaterialPreferred.

  11. In the Value box, type the name of the library material record that you want to assign as the preferred material for this part file or FEM. The name must match exactly the name of the material record as it is defined in the material library. For example, type Aluminum_2014.

  12. Click OK to add the attribute and close the Displayed Part Properties dialog box.

  13. Save the part file or FEM.

Now, when this part file or FEM is opened, the Assign Material, Manage Materials, and Material Library Manager dialog boxes automatically pre-filter the list of materials to display only the material that you specified with the preferred material attribute.
