Using custom materials

Pre/Post includes a material library that provides some sample data that is for demonstration purposes only; you can create your own accurate and up-to-date material property definitions. These custom materials can be stored in a separate material library file as material definitions that you can assign to any model.

About the material library format used in NX 7.5 and later releases

  • Beginning with NX 7.5, the material library format changed to a MatML XML format.

  • The software supports the MatML version 3.1.

  • The legacy Physical Material Library environment variables (those variables named with UGII_PHYS_MATERIAL_LIB_*) no longer apply to the material library in NX 7.5 and later releases.

  • Starting with NX 11 or Simcenter 3D 11, the legacy material library .dat format is no longer supported.

Site and User MatML libraries

  • You can store custom material definitions in two external libraries: a Site library and a User library, which you can manage independently using customer defaults. This lets you specify a material library that everyone uses (Site) and a second material library to which only certain users are given access (User).

  • Use customer defaults for the Materials function to define the default location of the two custom libraries, as well as configure access to each library.

  • The software stores custom material libraries as XML files in the MatML schema.

  • You can manage your custom material definitions using the Material Library Manager dialog box.

Local materials

When you assign a material definition to a model, the material is saved as a local material directly in the current FEM. When you load a library material definition (either by using the Load Library Material into the File command or by assigning the material to a physical property or to a solid body), the local material is locked and you cannot edit it. Therefore, the local material retains the property values that were in the material library file at the time they were loaded.

Synchronizing material definitions and local materials

If you modify a material definition in the material library file, you can manually update the local material with the new properties in the material library file using the Update Material command. Or you can set up the update process to be automatic using the Update Material Properties from Library on Part Load customer default.
