Reference and Initial Temperatures in Samcef (Simcenter Samcef)

In Output in the Simcenter Samcef input file, the thermal strain computation is given by:

where:

  • αi(T) is the CTE computed at the model's temperature T.

  • αi(T0) is the CTE computed at the T0 initial temperature.

  • Tref is the reference temperature.

Tref reference temperature

The Tref reference temperature is chosen according to the following workflow:

  1. Simcenter Samcef solver looks for the Temperature (TREF) reference temperature in the material.

  2. If this temperature does not exist, Simcenter Samcef solver uses the Tstruct-ref Default Reference Temperature (.GEL TEMP) defined on the Analysis page of the Solution dialog box.For more information, see the TEMP parameter of the Samcef .GEL command in the Simcenter Samcef solver documentation.

  3. If Tstruct-ref is not defined, 0 C° is assumed.

T0 initial temperature

By default, the T0 is equal to the Tstruct-ref Default Reference Temperature (.GEL TEMP).

In a Simcenter Samcef Nonlinear solution, you can change this default on the Solution dialog box→Analysis page→Initial Temperature Definition (.ALGO ITH0) list:

For more information, see the .ALGO command in the Simcenter Samcef solver documentation.

  • If you select CLT TIN, T0 is equal to the initial temperature defined in the Initial Temperature load.

  • If you select Structural Reference Temperature, T0 is equal to the Default Reference Temperature (.GEL TEMP).

  • If you select Temperature Field at Time 0, T0 is equal to the temperature of the model computed at the initial time 0 s.

For more information, see the Calculated Temperature field page in the Simcenter Samcef solver documentation.
